Herman Academy

Why do you think this teacher deserves to be nominated?
Hello, I am nominating Gurald Lewis, a STEPs teacher, at Herman Academy Secondary. STEPS is a self-contained Special Education Program to meet the diverse needs of students with physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as behavioral needs. I have nominated him because as our school's football coach, he is always mentoring students; not only with sports, but with the many social and family situations that often arise. Also, as the coach of our Special Olympics basketball, he has developed student team-building on and off the court. As a result, the team has qualified to attend the Special Olympic Championship games in Toronto this May. Winning this money would go towards supplies needed to attend the games, and fund other hygiene necessities for our classroom. Thank-you for listening.
Explain how this teacher goes "above and beyond" for the students:
Mr. Lewis stays after school every night helping students and coaching. He helps on his lunch hour also. He is always there for students in need.

Sandwich Secondary

Why do you think this teacher deserves to be nominated?
Matt has came to Sandwich Secondary this year being placed for the first time in a fully self contained special education classroom. He has embraced each and every student in his classroom. He has taken the time to both develop a working knowledge of his students and their various needs by continually having dialogue with his colleagues and the students themselves. This has positioned him to help support each individual student in their educational journey. Matt is a valued coach of the school cross country team and he consistently sets an example of acceptance within the school community of our STEPS students (something we are trying hard to foster within our school). Matt is always encouraging the students to reach beyond their comfort zone and has shared with the students his journey of competing in the Iron Man competition. He is open about both his successes and failures with the students, inspiring them to take risks. Matt has committed to helping the students develop a peer helping network within the school so that they can learn the value of contributing to their community. He always leads by exampling sharing with the students events that he organizes in the community to encourage fitness for kids. Matt is an all around great teacher!
Explain how this teacher goes "above and beyond" for the students.
Matt regularly gives up his prep to help support students who could use some extra support. He consistently offers support and help in the STEPS classroom when he feels the staff could benefit from an extra set of hands. When Matt sees a need he will respond with action. He has provided material like shoes and outerwear for students who were lacking. Matt took on the responsibility of supervising a new student who had challenges to join the lunch dodgeball team and this was a huge success.
